Why Kids Need Ergonomics Too

Every August the back-to-school sales start, and everyone I know is out shopping for the essentials: shoes, backpacks, folders, whatever's on the list. What almost nobody is thinking about is whether the backpack itself, or the desk their kid does homework at, actually fits their kid's body.
The pandemic put a version of this on full display, whether we wanted it to or not. Kids doing schoolwork at the kitchen table, propped up on a bed, hunched over a laptop balanced on a stack of books or nothing at all, sitting in a dining chair built for an adult. It got treated as a temporary problem, something to survive until school reopened. For a lot of kids, some version of that setup never fully went away.
I get it. Ergonomics sounds like an office word. Something for people who sit at a computer forty hours a week, not for an eight-year-old. But kids carry loads, hunch over screens, and sit in furniture that doesn't fit them for six-plus hours a day, five days a week, ten months a year.
Little bodies. Big problems.

The Backpack Problem
You've seen it. A kid walking to school leaning forward at the waist, shoulders rounded, taking each step like they're pushing into a gale force headwind. This is what happens when a bag is too heavy for the body carrying it.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a backpack weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of a child's body weight, with the more conservative estimates favoring the lower end. For a 60 pound child, that's 6 to 12 pounds. Most packed school backpacks land somewhere around 6 to 13 pounds these days, and it's rarely textbooks doing the damage anymore. Most schools have shifted to Chromebooks and shared classroom sets instead of a stack of hardcover textbooks, so if your kid isn't hauling home a backpack full of books, that part checks out. But a laptop, a water bottle, lunch, and a couple of binders add up fast, and it's easy to exceed the recommended range.
Studies on backpack weight in schoolchildren consistently find measurable changes in gait, posture, and step pattern from carrying heavier loads, even over short walks, and most kids repeat that loaded walk to the bus stop, between classes, and home again, day after day. It's less a single dramatic strain and more a cumulative load like many of the injuries I see.
The weight matters, but so does how it's carried. One strap slung over a shoulder pulls the spine into a lateral lean. Both straps, worn snug, with the pack sitting at hip level and the heaviest items closest to the back, distributes the load in the best possible way.
What to check: Watch your kid put the backpack on and take a few steps. If they lean forward to compensate, or one shoulder sits noticeably lower than the other, it's too heavy or worn wrong.
Tech Neck Starts Younger Than You Think
People always sit up straight and lean in with interest when I talk about tech neck in my trainings. You can’t walk down the street without seeing 90% of the population walking by looking down at their phones. I used to only see the bump at the base of the neck in older people, at the very youngest, middle aged people. Now it is not uncommon to see people in their twenties, coworkers, friends, sometimes people I've known for years, already carrying a visible bump at the base of the neck. It's similar to the dowager's hump, (often associated with older people and excessive rounding of the thoracic spine), and largely due to posture.
A 2022 study of 288 primary school children in Egypt, found that 46 percent already showed measurable forward head posture on assessment, at ages 7 to 10. That means this isn't a problem that waits for adulthood to start. It's shaping how the spine develops while it's still growing. Separate research on forward head posture in children connects it to changes in the neck's natural curve over time, including flattening and added wear on the discs and vertebrae in that area.
So do kids really stare at a screen all day at school? Not literally. They're still looking at the teacher, the board, each other. But school device use adds up faster than most parents realize. Depending on the district, the teacher and grade level, recommended screen time during the school day runs from about 30 to 45 minutes in elementary school up to 1.5 to 3 hours in high school, and actual use tends to run at or above that recommendation, not under it. That's before any screen time that happens after the final bell.
Neck and upper back pain in this age group isn't rare anymore either. A 2025 study of 622 adolescents found 56 percent reported musculoskeletal pain in at least one area of the body within the past six months, with the upper back the most commonly affected region, followed by the neck. That is one of the most common complaints from my clients seeking ergonomic assessments. Now it’s happening to children.
The Classroom Chair Wasn't Built for Your Kid
Most parents already notice this one. The chair is too big, the desk edge hits mid-chest instead of at the elbows, your kid's feet dangle a few inches off the floor all year. What's missing isn't awareness. It's a sense that there's anything to be done about it, so it fades into the background instead of getting flagged as a real problem.
Classroom furniture is bought in bulk, sized for an average, and used by a room full of kids who are anything but average. Even within a single grade, normal height ranges span several inches. A chair that fits a smaller kid in the class perfectly can be wrong for a classmate who's four or five inches taller. Research on classroom seating backs up what should be obvious: fewer than one in five students end up with a desk and chair combination that actually fits their body. Poorly fitted furniture doesn't just cause discomfort. It shows up as fidgeting, slouching, and difficulty sustaining attention, because a body that's uncomfortable is a body that's distracted.
I'm not going to pretend a parent can fix classroom furniture. You probably can't. But you can be the person who understands why your kid comes home saying their back hurts or they can't sit still, and you can make sure the parts of their day you do control (the backpack, the home desk, the device setup) aren't adding to a problem they're already sitting in for six hours.
What You Can Actually Control
Most kids don't have a home office, but a lot of them do homework somewhere. A kitchen table, a bedroom desk, the couch with a laptop balanced on their knees. The same core principles I use for adult desk setups apply here, just scaled down. I wrote about the full setup here, but the short version for kids:
Feet flat on the floor or a footrest. Dangling feet mean no support for the lower back. A stack of books works fine if a footrest isn't in the budget.
Screen at eye level and within arm’s reach. Books or a box under a laptop raise it enough to stop the forward head tilt. This is the single easiest fix for tech neck.
A chair that actually fits. If their feet don't reach the floor or their elbows aren't near the desk surface at roughly 90 degrees, consider a chair that goes higher or setting them up at a different “desk”.
Movement breaks, built in, not just hoped for. Kids are not designed to sit still for long stretches any more than adults are. A break every 30 to 40 minutes to stand, stretch, or walk around resets both the body and the attention span.
None of this requires a big purchase. A stack of books and a five-minute conversation about how to wear a backpack covers most of it.
Why This Matters Beyond This School Year
The habits and postures kids build now don't stay contained to childhood. Research on forward head posture in children links it to changes in how the neck's natural curve develops, not just how it feels years later. This isn't only a comfort issue that shows up in adulthood. It's about the shape the spine is taking while it's still being built. I see this constantly in my adult clients too: the pattern usually didn't start the day they walked into their first office job. It started a lot earlier, and nobody caught it.
This is also exactly why I think ergonomics deserves a bigger seat at the table when we talk about kids' health. We spend a lot of energy on nutrition and screen time limits, both of which matter. But the physical setup of the six-plus hours a day kids spend sitting and the time they spend looking at a device rarely gets the same attention, even though the body pays for it the same way.
What to Check This Week
Weigh your kid's fully packed backpack. Is it under 10 to 20 percent of their body weight?
Watch them put it on. Are both straps snug, sitting at hip level, not sagging to one side?
Look at their homework setup. Is the screen at eye level? Are their feet supported? Are their arms relaxed with the worksurface at elbow height?
Ask if they get up and move during the school day, and build in short movement breaks during homework time.
The Bottom Line
Kids' bodies are still developing, which means they're both more vulnerable to poor setups and more responsive when you fix them. This isn't about turning your kid's bedroom into an ergonomics lab. It's about a few small, specific checks that take less time than picking out school supplies.
